As mentioned above, there is a backwards-compatible error metric called "contrast-v22". This is the metric that was used in RenderMan 22 and older: a relative contrast, with the contrast in dark pixels optionally reduced with "darkfalloff". (Note that the three new error metrics do not use "darkfalloff" since their gamma-weighted absolute differences have a similar effect.)

Note the better concentration of samples using the Variance metric. However, more samples were taken and the image took 6 minutes longer. This is why it's recommended to increase the relative pixel variance control for similar render times.
